Book Camp: Sign of the Beaver
by Elizabeth George Spear - This book takes place in 1768 in what will eventually become the state of Maine. It tells the story of a 12 year old boy, Matt, who is left alone in the wilderness while his father leaves to bring the rest of his family to the cabin they have built. After becoming injured, Matt is nursed back to health by a local tribal leader and his grandson. Once Matt is well, him and a Native American boy exchange skills they need in a changing world. We will study and learn these skills ourselves. This camp also includes an overnight stay in the Buckles Program Center without electricity to simulate staying in an 18th century cabin. Hartman will provide the reading materials.
Grades: Children entering 6th-8th
Price: $120
Dates: July 6-9 (Overnight stay on the 8th)
Time: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Pick-up Saturday at 9:00 a.m.)
