Prairie to Pasture Camp

Silos & Smokestacks and Hartman Reserve!

Spend the summer exploring the sights, sounds and smells of Iowa. Each day campers will go on a new and exciting adventure within Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area. Activities include: canoeing rivers to historic mills, feeding wild buffalo, visiting the home of Laura Ingalls Wilder, milking cows and much, much more.
Camps are open to students in grades 3-8. Costs vary for these one day adventures or register for all five days of camp for $140. Participants are responsible for bringing their own lunch and reusable water bottle. Base camp is Hartman Reserve Nature Center.

Find out how much FUN nature can be as we investigate the outdoors! Games, crafts, and hikes are provided. Campers need to wear clothes that can get messy, and need to bring sunscreen, hat and water bottle each day. Parents are always welcome to attend with their children.

Explore the pond, prairie, and woods to find the amphibians, birds and insects that fill our world with music!
June 29: Get a Backbone!
Learn about Iowa creatures that have no backbone! Explore the park for invertebrates such as insects,
spiders, slugs, millipedes and roly-poly pillbugs.
July 13: Fox Hunt
Learn about the
red fox family that has made Hartman
Reserve their home. Are you clever enough to
follow a scent trail through the woods?
July 27: Hide and Seek
Join us
for activities and games about
camouflage and animal adaptations!
August 10: Mystery Critters
After learning about basic needs for
survival, the children will look for clues
that will help them discover the identity
of their mystery critter.

On The Wild Side - 2nd & 3rd grades
Thursdays, 9:00 a.m. - Noon
Take a walk on the wild side of nature with these entertaining activities! Games, crafts, and hikes provided. Campers need to wear clothes that can get messy, and should bring sunscreen, a hat and a water bottle each day.
June 17: Net Dipping at Turtle Pond
Prepare to get muddy as you discover the wildlife present both in and around the pond.
July 1: Campfire Treats
Forage for berries, learn how to start a fire and learn some simple campfire recipes.
July 15: Nature’s Yucky & We Love It!
Discover the gross stuff that helps nature work. Can you handle scat, half-digested food, pellets, and nature’s version of a diaper?
July 29: “Cribs” of the Feathered & Famous
Some use mud, others use horsehair. Figure out which birds use hollow trees and which ones build nests; learn about urban roosts and climb to the top of the osprey tower.
August 12: Hollar for Solar
Learn about solar power through activities, games and solar s’mores!

Explorers - 4th-5th grades
Mondays, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
This is for those youth looking for an adventure. Most programs are trips away from the Nature Center in the Hartman vans and are limited to 15 participants.
June 14: EWALU Low Ropes
Price: $40
Learn how to work together as a team while mastering a variety of team challenges.
June 28: Nature Exploration at Twin Springs
Price: $20
Explore nature by getting right in it. Be prepared to get dirty.
July 12: Finding your Way at Hickory Hills
Price: $20
Learn how to use a compass, GPS and your natural surroundings to find your way.
July 26: Paddle at Sweet Marsh
Price: $25
Travel to Bremer County for a canoe trip on one of the only marsh areas around.
August 9: Spelunking at Maquoketa Caves
Price: $25
Cool off with a trip inside the earth. Be prepared to get muddy!

Jr. Naturalist Expeditions - 6th to 8th grades
Wednesdays, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Experience the thrill of the outdoors in these adventurous expeditions! Snacks are included with each program. Bring a lunch, water bottle, hat and sunscreen. Refer to the program description for other needed supplies.
June 16: EWALU High Ropes Course
Price: $45
Challenge by choice is the motto. You will be 25-40 feet up in Ewalu's treetops; the focus is on
individual achievement, self confidence, and personal awareness.
June 30: Outdoor Skills & Shooting Sports
Price: $25
How does shooting bow and arrows or a pellet gun sound? What about fire starting,
shelter building and other fun outdoor adventures? If you answered, “Awesome!” then this is the camp for you!
July 14: Rock Climbing at Backbone State Park
Price: $45
Spiderman isn’t the only one who can scale the side of a rocky cliff. You can too! Join Hartman and EWALU staff for rock climbing at Backbone State Park.
July 28: Cedar River Expedition
Price: $25
Paddle a stretch of the Cedar River in Black Hawk County. No experience necessary.
August 11: Trout Fishing
Price: $25
Learn the basics of trout fishing, go to a fish hatchery, and enjoy the day outside in NE Iowa
